Raysa Castillo, Esq.

 

Raysa Castillo came from the Dominican Republic at the age of 13, to Williamsburg, Brooklyn, where she was enrolled in a bilingual class in public school.  She was raised by the women in her family, with a keen interest in politics.  Today, she is married to a first-generation American, and has two children, and together, they are proud to stand firmly on the shoulders of hard working immigrant families and continue their tradition of increasing prosepcts for this generation and next.

 

Raysa attended the College of Staten Island, where she obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science and Spanish, with a concentration in Public Administration.  While in college, she founded the first Latin American Club and was active in Student Government.  Ms. Castillo was also an active participant in the movement to bring child-care to CUNY schools.  Upon graduating college with a 3.79 average, and a 4.0 in her major, Ms. Castullo went on to study law.  TOday, she is the vheif attorney for Castillo & Associates, P.C., her law firm.

 

Raysa Castillo's record of commitment to public spans more than a decade.  It began in 1991, when she began interning at Bronx Legal Service.  Fulfilling a long-standing dream of someday becoming a lawyer, in 1992, Ms. Castillo began using her degree to contribute positively to the community by working as a Housing and Public Benefits Attorney in the Bronx.  As such, she represented poor and low-income families in the courts.

 

Ms. Castillo, who also served as a Board member and District Six Community School Board, worked closelywith the parents in the over-crowded, under-served district.  Ms. Catillo is particularly proud that during her tenure the math and reading scores increased significantly.  She is also the President of the Dominican Women's Caucus.  The Dominican Wmen's Caucus not only served as an important conduit for all its members by providing information, networking opportunities, and training workshops, but also offers tutoring, mentoring and orientation for women and girls.  Raysa Castillo has a record of pro-bono legal work in the community.  Currently, she is the Vice Chair of the Audubon Partnership for Economic Development.

 

Ms. Castillo joined the New York City Council, where she served as Counsel to the Women's Issues Committee.  After less than a year at City Council, Ms. Castillo was recruited to join the off ice of New York State Assemlyman Ramirez in the Bronx.  Ms. Castillo was them promoted to Executive Director of the Bronx Democratic County Committee.

 

In the year 2000, Ms. Castillo joined the New York State Democratic Committee's Victory 2000, as its Deputy Political Director, assisting the Political Dircetor with Hillary Rodham Clinton and Al Gore compaigns.  Since, Raysa has remained involved in community service and political activism by organizing a run for State Senate, being part of the founding team of Latina PAC, Dominican Power Vote and the Committee for Equitable Representation.  Raysa Castillo has also served as the President of the Dominican Bar Association for the years 2008 and 2009.
